Man Enough to Be a Woman eBook Rupert Smith

Remember Wayne County and the Electric Chairs? Long before drag queens dominated the media, before gender-bending, before punk, even before Stonewall, there was Jayne County. From the 60s to the 90s she’s been the craziest, the most extreme queen ever to hit a rock ‘n’ roll stage. She’s known and worked with Warhol, Bowie and Derek Jarman, been an actress, a singer and a prostitute. She’s the world’s original and only rock ‘n’ roll transsexual, crossing the genders in the full glare of publicity. Man Enough to be a Woman is the wild, hilarious and shameless account of Jayne’s life from her cissy-boy childhood in Georgia to her current 90s renaissance, as a new wave of superstars claim her as their inspiration.
Man Enough to Be a Woman eBook Rupert Smith
Jayne County, formerly known as Wayne County continues to be an iconic figure. She was the first transexual punk rocker who was a part of the Andy Warhol art clique. More notably, she was around during the Stonewall riots and helped to fight back against the injustices of the time. The biography reads as though you are sitting down and having a one on one conversation with County. We are taken through the paces of her impoverished youth, her determination to be herself against the odds and against the oppressive society of her time. We are given a front seat view as we travel across the continents as she found her niche in the underground music world and the performing arts venue as a stage and film actress.
County admits that a lot had to be left out because some of the key players are now famous who also have famously expensive lawyers. That alone makes one drool for a second installment.
Overall, this is a very straightforward account of her life. The matter of fact candid style doesn't delve into embellishments but instead gives us a lot of insight and perception with the gentlest of southern charm at the same time. For a snapshot of life in the early 70's up through the just blossoming New Wave era of 80's, this book is a testament to a simpler, somewhat caustic, yet artistically productive time in our history.

Man Enough to Be a Woman eBook Rupert Smith Reviews
how delighted I am to see an e book version of this legendary saga, which had been out
of print for way too many years; the star studded tale of Wayne into Jayne County runs parallel
to Miss County's participation in Warhol, Glitter/Glam, Punk, and the post punk
scene that led to the birth of the 90's 'club kids'..Jayne County served as a figure
head through it all, although in America she remained a cult figure, as her classic
UK punk era albums were never released in America; at last, the world gets to know and love
Jayne County as much as some of us have for decades... Enjoy!
This subject fascinates me. It opened a new world to me. I never knew the struggles of trannies.
great
This book is amazing, Jayne County never gets the credit for what a true original and innovator she was. This book is brilliant from beginning to end. Hopefully one day we can read the rest of her story.
It gave a lot of background on Wayne/Jayne County, and her life led has been fascinating. She is not just the rock and roller that I thought anyways. Her stage show was always cool, got to see her once in New York. She was there in the punk deal, and I thought that was it. There is way more to her than just that. It was a good read and flowed right along.
